You Screwed Up with Lionel Messi But What About Steph Curry?

I recently wrote about how Nike lost Lionel Messi over a few tracksuits:

Another person familiar with how Nike lost Mr. Messi remembers it coming down to something a little more trivial. Leo’s father had made a seemingly innocuous request for more athletic gear, only to find that neither Nike Iberia nor Nike South America was getting back to him. That was enough to sour the relationship. Nike, this person said, let Mr. Messi get away for a few hundred bucks worth of tracksuits.

That didn’t work out so well, did it? And especially after yesterday’s World Cup game! Well, I have another one for you. Future Hall-of-Famer Steph Curry was being courted by Nike as well and guess what? Yup, they screwed it up again.  You can read the whole article here but to summarize:

  • They sent in their the B-team for their presentation to Steph and his Dad.
  • They kept mispronouncing his name with no one in the room correcting them.
  • They used a PowerPoint presentation and NEVER changed the slides so it had Kevin Durant’s name on it rather Steph Curry’s!

If Nike is doing this crap do you think that your hospital is doing the same?

YES!

It is the little things that can make or break you. Yes, this story is about recruiting but it also goes for retention. Signing up a star (or doctor) and then ignoring them after they are there is a major mistake as well.
